How it works

Useful privacy, without privacy theater.

Coordinates can be stored in EXIF and in XMP. This tool removes the EXIF GPS directory while keeping other camera details; an XMP packet that holds coordinates is removed as a whole.

  1. InspectRead supported metadata locally.
  2. Clean and verifyReparse the output and compare image payloads.

What it removes

  • EXIF GPS latitude, longitude, altitude and GPS timestamps
  • XMP packets that contain coordinates
  • The embedded preview thumbnail and extra images appended after the photo
  • Place names typed into captions or IPTC fields are not coordinates and are kept; use the Metadata Cleaner to remove them

Questions, answered

What this tool does and does not do.

Can I remove GPS from an iPhone HEIC photo?

Not directly — HEIC is not a supported format here. Share or export the photo as JPEG first, then remove the coordinates from that copy. iOS can also strip location at share time under Options in the share sheet.

Does this keep my camera settings?

Yes. Only the EXIF GPS directory is removed; camera, lens, exposure and capture date are left in place. Use the metadata cleaner if you want those gone too.

Will it remove a place name written in the caption?

No. A typed location in a caption, keyword or IPTC field is descriptive text rather than coordinates, so it is kept here. The metadata cleaner removes those fields.

A platform strips location on upload anyway — why bother?

Stripping happens after the original file reaches the platform, and it does not apply to a file sent by email, chat attachment or file share. Removing coordinates before you share is the only step that covers every destination.
