How it works
Useful privacy, without privacy theater.
This page preconfigures the converter for AVIF to JPEG. Your browser's own AVIF decoder does the reading, the JPEG encoder re-encodes at your chosen quality, and the output is verified before download.
- InspectRead supported metadata locally.
- Process and verifyEncode locally, decode the result again, and report measured numbers.
What it does
- AVIF input decoded natively by current Chrome, Firefox and Safari
- JPEG output with a quality slider, defaulting to 85
- Animated AVIF converts its first frame only, stated before processing
- 10-bit and wide-color AVIF files are tone-mapped to 8-bit by the decoder
- Freshly encoded output carries no EXIF, GPS or XMP
Questions, answered
What this tool does and does not do.
Why can't I open my AVIF in an old app?
AVIF is still young outside web browsers. Many desktop editors, CMS uploads and messaging apps expect JPEG, and converting is the honest fix — everywhere else, keep the AVIF.
Does converting lose quality?
JPEG is lossy, so a little. At quality 85 the difference from the AVIF is rarely visible; the tool shows the measured output size and re-decodes the result before calling it done.
My browser says it cannot decode the file. Why?
AVIF decoding ships with current Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Old browsers without it cannot be fixed from a web page — the tool detects this and says so rather than pretending.
What happens to my metadata?
The JPEG is written from decoded pixels only, so whatever the AVIF carried — EXIF, XMP, comments — stays behind.
