How it works

Useful privacy, without privacy theater.

This page preconfigures the converter for PNG to WebP. Your browser decodes the PNG and re-encodes it as WebP — lossy at your chosen quality — then verifies the output before download.

  1. InspectRead supported metadata locally.
  2. Process and verifyEncode locally, decode the result again, and report measured numbers.

What it does

  • PNG input of any color type, decoded by your browser
  • WebP output with a quality slider; transparency is preserved automatically
  • Lossy WebP is usually smaller than PNG on screenshots and graphics
  • Animated PNGs are not a WebP animation here — the first frame is converted, and the tool says so
  • Freshly encoded output carries no EXIF, GPS or XMP

Questions, answered

What this tool does and does not do.

Does WebP keep my transparency?

Yes — WebP has a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels survive conversion. That is the key advantage over PNG-to-JPEG.

Can it convert losslessly?

This converter uses the quality slider, which is lossy WebP and by far the most space-efficient. At quality 90+ graphics stay visually identical while shrinking far below the PNG.

Why is WebP smaller than PNG for screenshots?

WebP's lossy compression models how vision works; PNG must store every pixel difference exactly. The result shows the measured output size.

Will metadata survive the conversion?

No. The output is built from decoded pixels, so text chunks, eXIf blocks and XMP packets cannot follow. Your original PNG is untouched.
